Professor, Vice-Rector of Administrative Affairs, Democritus University of Thrace

Prof Raphael Sandaltzopoulos completed his PhD at EMBL, worked as a post-doc fellow (EMBO, HFSPO) at the National Institutes of Health (Bethesda, USA) and received his MBA from Keller’s Graduate School of Management (1999, USA). He worked as Senior Scientist in Biotech companies and became the first Faculty member at the Dept. of Molecular Biology & Genetics (MBG), Democritus University of Thrace (DUTh., 2002).

He has served in prestigious positions at DUTh (President of the Research Committee, Vice-Rector of Investments and Infrastructure Planning, first elected Chairman at MBG, Member of the Senate, etc). He was a member of the Board of the Hellenic National Academic Recognition Information Center and as Scientific Expert of the Greek National Committee for the EU-FP7 (Food, Agriculture & Biotechnology). Since September 2018 he has been the Vice-Rector of Administrative Affairs.

His research interests focus on a) the identification of molecular biomarkers in cancer and b) biotechnological applications of genomics and recombinant DNA technology. He co-authored >60 research articles in peer-reviewed journals such as: Nature, Cell, Mol Cell, Genes Dev, PNAS USA, EMBO J, etc. (citations >6000, h-factor 32) and participated in 20 research grants (11 as Coordinator/Scientist in charge) with a total budget >10 M€.
